US, PH ELECTION EXPERTS GATHER IN MANILA FOR ELECTORAL REFORM FORUM

Two esteemed scholars from the United States are coming to Manila next week to speak at a roundtable discussion on Electoral Reform to be hosted by the Angara Centre for Law and Economics on January 29, 2013.

Dr. John VC Nye of George Mason University will present research on the automation of Philippine elections, while Dr. Alberto Simpser of the University of Chicago will present a paper on electoral fraud across the globe.

12 HEADS OF FOREIGN PARLIAMENTS TO VISIT MANILA FOR ANTI-CORRUPTION CONFERENCE

Manila, Philippines—Twelve heads of parliament are set to arrive in Manila next week to attend the 5th Global Conference of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC).

The Conference, co-hosted by the Senate of the Philippines and GOPAC’s regional arm, the Southeast Asian Parliamentarians Against Corruption (SEAPAC), will be held at the Philippine International Convention Center from January 30 to February 2, 2013.

Last week, I visited Davao City to keynote the 14th National Lawyers’ Convention and 40th Founding Anniversary of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP).

There, I underscored that major changes are posing challenges—as well as providing new opportunities—in the realms of law practice and legal education today.

'INFRA SPENDING WILL SPUR ECONOMIC GROWTH' - SEN. ANGARA

Senator Edgardo Angara stressed that the government’s plan to construct infrastructure and community-development related projects is a “smart investment” which can steer the country’s economy to greater heights.

Angara issued the statement following the National Economic and Development Authority’s announcement that it has approved five infrastructure and community development-related projects, including two in the government’s priority public-private partnership (PPP) list.

ANGARA: NEW MATH & SCIENCE TEACHERS NEEDED FOR EXTENDED CURRICULUM

During a recent public hearing of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology, Senator Edgardo J. Angara underscored the need for more highly-qualified new teachers especially in Mathematics and Science as the K to 12 curriculum will be implemented throughout the country.

“We are encouraging the creation of scholarships for science and math teachers to teach in primary and secondary levels throughout the country—but of course, the heart of the matter here is financing,” he explained.

Senator Edgardo J. Angara called on the government to invest in water and sanitation projects as he expressed serious concern over the deteriorating state of sanitation in the country.

Angara said that poor sanitation remains a perennial problem in the Philippines as 26 million Filipinos, roughly 30 percent of the total population, still have no access to clean toilets and other sanitation facilities.

"Every person deserves access to clean water and sanitation facilities," emphasized Angara. "In the absence of such, people dangerously expose themselves to sickness and disease."

ANTI-MONEY LAUNDERING EXPERTS FLY TO MANILA FOR GLOBAL CONFERENCE

The country’s efforts to strengthen anti-money laundering legislation have received a nod from the international community. Two world-renowned experts on anti-money laundering are coming to Manila later this month to speak in the 5thGlobal Conference of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC).

Preparations are well underway for Manila to host one of the largest events in the worldwide movement against corruption—the 5th Global Conference of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC).

AUSTRALIAN, CANADIAN LAWMAKERS TO SPEAK IN MANILA CONFERENCE

Hon. Peter Loney, member of Australia’s Labor Party, and Hon. Bryon Wilfert, are among the top-notch international speakers for the upcoming 5th Global Conference of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) to be held at the end of the month. There are two of over 300 international parliamentarians who will flock to Manila to attend this much-anticipated global event.
