ANGARA RECOGNIZES PAG-ASA’S ACCURATE FORECAST, SEEKS FINANCIAL AID FOR TYPHOON JUAN VICTIMS

Senator Edgardo J. Angara recognized the accuracy of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) in forecasting the path of Supertyphoon Juan last week.

Typhoon Juan, also known as Megi, was the world’s biggest and strongest storm so far this year. PAG-ASA officials correctly predicted that Juan would make landfall in Isabela, opposing the international forecasts which said that it would land in Cagayan. The residents of the hardest hit towns were able to prepare properly, minimizing the casualties and amount of damage.

COMSTE IDENTIFIES PRIORITY PROJECTS FOR 2011

Senator Edgardo J. Angara, Chair of the Congressional Commission on Science and Technology and Engineering (COMSTE), and Representative Joseph Emilio Abaya, COMSTE co-chair, today identified the priority projects of COMSTE for 2011 which include Telemedicine, Remote-Sensing for Agriculture, Electronic Vehicles and Green Transport and Disaster Science.

SOLAR POWER EYED AS SOLUTION TO MINDANAO POWER CRISIS

Solar energy has been identified as a potential solution to the Mindanao power crisis by the Congressional Commission on Science, Technology and Engineering (COMSTE), chaired by Senator Edgardo J. Angara.

“Our COMSTE panel experts in Energy and Environment have targeted solar energy as a key factor in overcoming the power crisis in Mindanao. This source of Renewable Energy (RE) can complement existing coal-fired plants and is applicable even if off-grid areas,” said Angara.

2011 BUDGET SHOULD RESPOND TO COUNTRY’S NEEDS—ANGARA

Senator Edgardo J. Angara called for stronger and more dynamic industry led partnerships to accelerate innovation in the fields of Science and Technology (S&T) and Research and development (R&D).

According to the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), the government is aiming for up to P200 billion worth of PPP projects in 2011 and that many local and foreign businessmen have expressed interest in getting involved. Angara noted that aside from building up physical infrastructure projects, we also need to cultivate a strong R&D and S&T base for the country.

MORE EFFECTIVE ANTI-DENGUE MEASURES NEEDED--ANGARA

As the number of dengue cases in the country continue to rise rapidly, Senator Edgardo J. Angara renews his call for more stringent anti-dengue measures by the government.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), a total of 290 cities and towns have been put under dengue alert, with Cebu being among the hardest hit areas with 1175 cases, with 11 deaths. The DOH also reported that all four strains of dengue have been detected, resulting in an 88.8 percent increase in dengue patients over the same period (January1 to August 21) last year.
