Taking preservation seriously

The Philippines is rich in resources and heritage, but has failed to exploit this unique advantage to promote the country, nor has it done significant steps in preserving its historic wealth.

Indiscriminate diggings and underwater explorations have already damaged many of our priceless cultural artifacts. In fact, many countries all over the world vigorously take measures against such despoliation. In the Senate, for example, I am pushing for the establishment of a permit system on underwater exploration so we can ensure that our underwater heritage is safeguarded.

Moreover, I proposed that a National Heritage Commission be created, under the guidance of a Heritage Advisory Council. The Commission's main role is to establish national guidelines for heritage conservation and preservation.

Lack of money would seem to make the preservation of our historical and cultural relics ambitious and impractical. But what we fail to see is that by developing and restoring them (e.g. Intramuros), we create vast opportunities for the country. By maintaining our historical integrity, we will attract more visitors and generate employment for our people in all parts of the country.
